Knockout fun day in West Bromwich

Year seven students from Phoenix Collegiate Academy and Shireland Collegiate Academy attended a special ‘It’s a Knockout’ themed fun day on Wednesday 30 October.

Young people from Smethwick and West Bromwich took part in a giant inflatable obstacle course competition as part of Sandwell Council’s iTrust Sandwell project.

The iTrust Sandwell project supports young people and their families that are in year six and seven in Smethwick and West Bromwich schools. More than 150 young people took part in the event at Phoenix Collegiate Academy during the school holidays.

Activities on the day focussed on encouraging young people to feel empowered, show leadership qualities, build resilience and work as part of a team. Prizes for the winners of the competition included medals and Argos gift cards. The iTrust Sandwell team was also joined by a host of different mentoring agencies including Base 25, Smethwick Youth and Community Centre, Gazebo, Act and Murry Hall Trust.

There were also members of different agencies such as Sandwell Young Carers and Black Country Women’s Aid who offered support and advice. BC Tigers Martial Arts Group supported the event and gave all attendees a voucher for a free session.

Councillor Joyce Underhill Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for best start in life, said: "The iTrust Sandwell project is supporting young people who may need a little extra help as they make the move to secondary school. "We know it's not always an easy time for young people and their families and we want to make sure their needs are fully met and address any issues of potential concern. "This fun day was clearly a hit with young people and their families and a great example of us working with other agencies to get support and advice to those who need it.”
