Sandwell Bereavement Services – Awards and Improvements

Two Sandwell cemeteries have been awarded prestigious Cemetery of the Year 2020 Gold and Silver prizes.

Tipton Cemetery, Alexandra Road, Tipton, was awarded the top Gold prize in the small/medium burial ground category for the second year running.

Fallings Heath, Beebee Road, Wednesbury, won Silver for the first time, in the Large Burial Ground category.

Both awards included a Cemetery of the Year 2020 Certificate.

But the Gold Award for Tipton Cemetery also includes a Cemetery of the Year 2020 Gold engraved Plaque and a £1000 cash prize.

Cemetery bosses chose to donate the prize money to the Mayor of Sandwell, Councillor Dr Ann Jaron's charities, Sandwell Young Carers and Brushstrokes Community Project. Meanwhile, renovation work continues at Sandwell Register Office, Highfields House in West Bromwich.

A new remote-controlled platform lift has been fitted in the reception to improve disabled access, along with a new reception desk complete with removable COVID-secure screens and an induction loop for hearing aid users.

Work on a new accessible path and improved signage has already been finished in the rear car park.

Further improvement work to the wedding suites is ongoing. Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for Resources and Core Services, Councillor Wasim Ali said: “I am extremely proud of the Registration Services team’s hard work and dedication during what has been a very difficult year for us all.

The Cemetery of the Year Awards are a testament to their efforts. “The new improvements to the Register Office mean we can keep our residents COVID-safe and now enable disabled residents to easily access the building and our registration services.” Due to the current situation with coronavirus we are now operating an appointment only service – to book an appointment visit
