| Blowing
your own trumpet - Promoting your successes! |
| |
When
your group achieves one of its key objectives go out and tell
people. You might consider doing this through: |
| |
-
A
regular newsletter
-
'A
special edition' style newsletter
-
Through
a circular or flyer
-
A
poster (but always get permission to display these and
don't 'fly post' them!)
-
A
special promotional event or meeting. This can be great
if you encourage existing existing members to bring along
friend or neighbor. Even if they don't end up joining
themselves they may well go away and spread the word through
their circle of friends and colleagues about what you
are doing (more free publicity!).
-
Through
an Internet website or a simple 'Home Page'. You could
look to identifying current members or an 'expert friend'
of the group who might have the skills to do this for
you.
-
Door
knocking, certainly the cheapest (but probably the most
time consuming way of promoting yourselves. It does have
the added advantage thought of creating the 'personal
touch' between you and audience and provides people with
a specific contact point to the group - i.e. the person
who knocked on heir door in the first place).
|
| |
Finally,
when you have carried out a successful piece of work you might
consider holding a small party or gathering to celebrate the
event. This should provide the volunteers and general membership
with an opportunity to recognise the fruits of their labours
and provide a suitable closure to that piece of work (see
also 'Forming a Community Group Toolkit'). |
| |
*Note:
If you are a funded group and are considering holding such
a celebratory event, please do check with your funders that
this is an appropriate (and acceptable) way of spending those
funds! |
