Developing a Promotional Strategy for your
Community Group

Specialist knowledge that might be needed to deliver a promotional strategy

Today, they key element to organising a local promotional strategy is identifying one or two groups members with a degree of I.T. literacy and who have access to I.T. equipment, In an ideal situation you might identify one or several volunteers willing and able to help who have relevant skills in:-

  • Word Processing
  • Desktop Publishing
  • Website Building
  • Experience within the sector you are engaged in (e.g. Housing, Healthcare, Community Development etc).

It might be as well to knowledge right from the start it is unlikely you will find all these skills wrapped up in individual. After all, organisations offering a salaried position might well be pushed to come up someone with all those skills!

In that case you might look to sharing out the work. For example an experienced member might write up the poster, newsletter or whatever and then another member with word processing skills might produce a leaflet, newsletter or poster from the information and away you go! Having the other skills will enhance how professional the end result might become, your basic requirements to get started are really just those two key skills.

Also remember you might be able to identify members who would say they do not have the necessary expertise but might have related skills that are transferable, with a little support and encouragement!

Writing up and presenting the information

The key elements to a good piece of writing are simple:-

  • Use plain English.
  • Keep it jargon free (or if you have to use it try and explain it a little if necessary).
  • Short sentences by and large work better than long elaborate ones (the spell check on the word processor will often help out with this one!).
  • Remember to target language and your writing style to the audience you are aiming at.
