LITTER WATCH GOES GLOBAL!

A small environmental charity in Sandwell has won two awards from the council's waste partner and global services company Serco.

Litter Watch, which is jointly funded by Serco and Sandwell Council for its work with the Eco Bus, was nominated for the Exceptional Impact category and won not once - but twice! Litter Watch won at both the UK & Europe Divisional Pulse Awards and the Global Awards.

The Pulse awards are Serco's internal recognition awards on an international basis. Bob Lloyd, Litter Watch’s chairman, said: "We are really delighted with these awards. "Litter Watch is a very small charity with only two employees and to win both awards is a great way of recognising the important work we do."

The Eco Bus is a mobile classroom that provides fun and interaction and is an informative space where youngsters can learn more about environmental responsibilities and the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling waste from the home. The Eco Bus offers practical environmental workshops whereby the children have fun while they are learning about serious issues from litter to recycling.

An Eco Bus visit is free to all Sandwell schools and is also available for local community events. It has already reached around 20,000 people through nearly 200 school visits and 76 community events. Councillor Maria Crompton, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for highways & environment, said: "I am so pleased that Litter Watch has won not one, but two awards. “It just goes to show that you don't always have to have big initiatives to make an impact. “Litter Watch is educating our youngsters right across the borough to be environmentally aware. I say very well done Litter Watch!" Jason Holtom, partnership director for Serco Environment Services, said: Our partnership with Litter Watch has gone from strength to strength in the last two years and we value the work the team does in terms of education and generating awareness across Sandwell about recycling and other environmental issues. “They support our services and share our vision for the borough. They are a passionate and enthusiastic team who thoroughly deserve this recognition.”
