SANDWELL CREMATORIUM OFFICIALLY REOPENS
The outdated Rowley Regis Crematorium and Chapel is officially reopening following a £1.3 million modernisation scheme.
Sandwell’s mayor Councillor Julie Webb will reopen the crematorium and chapel in Powke Lane on Thursday October 6.
Work to upgrade the building and chapel, which first opened in 1962, started two years ago and has seen the chapel more than double its capacity for up to 120 mourners.
Improvements include a new more energy-efficient cremator to replace old machines, a dedicated waiting area and reception and digital music and web broadcasting facilities for family and friends who cannot attend a funeral.
There is also dedicated car parking, a new sheltered floral space, a new book of remembrance room, new entrance, improved toilet facilities and improvements to the interior and exterior of the building. Councillor Syeda Khatun, Sandwell’s deputy leader, said: “Sandwell has always recognised the importance its residents place at what is a very difficult time in their lives, on a quality frontline service such as the Bereavement Service.
This is another significant investment in our service and I am delighted with all the improvements to both the chapel and crematorium.” Bereavement Services in Sandwell has seen significant investment including £3.2 million redevelopment at Sandwell Valley crematorium, £400k new reception suite at Sandwell Valley Crematorium and new coroner’s facilities in Oldbury.
