MAYOR OFFICIALLY OPENS REFURBISHED ROWLEY REGIS CREMATORIUM
Rowley Regis Crematorium was officially opened by the Mayor of Sandwell today (Thursday), following a £1.3million refurbishment.
The outdated 1960s building has been extended to include a waiting room for families and the chapel has doubled in capacity to seat 120 mourners. Other improvements include a more energy-efficient cremator to replace older machines, a new digital music system and web broadcasting facilities for family and friends who cannot attend a funeral.
There is also dedicated car parking, a new sheltered space for flowers, a new book of remembrance room, a new entrance and improved toilet facilities.
Mayor of Sandwell Councillor Julie Webb said: “Sandwell has always recognised the importance our residents place on a frontline service such as the Bereavement Service at what is a very difficult time in their lives.
“I’d like to give a special mention to the hard work of the bereavement team, the construction contractor Interclass, Martin Critchell Architects, funeral directors for their contribution and patience during the redevelopment and officers from across the council who with the support of councillors have done a great job.
” Councillor Syeda Khatun, Sandwell’s deputy leader and cabinet member for neighbourhoods and communities, said: “It’s so important that we try to make things as easy as possible for people who have lost loved ones.
“Any visit to the crematorium, either for a service or to remember a loved one and lay flowers, is never easy. “The improvements we’ve made represent a huge investment in frontline services to make things easier for residents where we can.
I am so pleased to see how much the crematorium has been improved.” Sandwell Council’s bereavement services has seen a significant investment in recent years, including the £3.2 million redevelopment of Sandwell Valley Crematorium and the £400k new reception suite – as well as the new coroner’s facilities at Jack Judge House in Oldbury.
