INTERSERVE TO BUILD NEW WEDNESBURY LEISURE CENTRE
Plans for a £7.1 million centre and swimming pool in Wednesbury have taken a
big step forward with Sandwell Council's decision to appoint contractor Interserve Construction Ltd.
Sandwell Council and Sandwell Leisure Trust are working together to fast-track the building of a new centre. The new complex will have a 25-metre pool, a learner pool, two dance studios and a 100-station fitness suite and is set to open in summer 2015.
The existing sports hall will be retained. Councillor Steve Eling, the council's deputy leader and cabinet member for strategic resources, said: "Our decision to award the contract to Interserve follows strong competition from several companies and is a key milestone in moving ahead with the new leisure centre in Wednesbury.
We look forward to working with Interserve, which is a local company, on the project. "One of our top priorities is helping more people be active, fit and well by providing high quality leisure facilities." Interserve Construction has considerable recent experience in the provision of swimming pools for other local authorities.
The council's in-house architectural team designed the new Wednesbury pool. They also designed the recently-opened Tipton Leisure Centre. The decision to build a new centre was taken following maintenance inspections that put the old facilities beyond economic repair.
