British Gas Energy Trust (The) Financial Assistance Available for Energy Debt Relief (England, Scotland, and Wales) - Deadline: Rolling

The British Gas Energy Trust has re-opened applications for its Individuals and Families Fund, offering grants of up to £1,700 to help households in England, Scotland, and Wales clear energy debt.

The scheme is not limited to British Gas customers. Applicants whose energy supplier does not operate a hardship fund – or whose application to such a fund has been declined – can also apply.

To qualify, households must meet specific debt thresholds: £50-£1,700 for prepayment meter accounts and £250-£1,700 for credit meter accounts. In addition, applicants must have an annual household income below £18,723 or meet vulnerability criteria such as having a registered disabled household member, being in receipt of Carer’s Allowance, or caring for three or more children.

Evidence of recent money or energy advice – obtained within the last six months from an advice agency or self-service benefits calculator - is required. Applicants must not have received a grant from the Trust in the last two years. The Trust emphasises that the fund aims to provide lasting relief by clearing arrears in full, preventing further debt escalation.

Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis, and supporting documentation is essential.

Applications are accepted at any time. More information at: https://britishgasenergytrust.org.uk/grants-available
