Sandwell's transport boss is backing this year's Catch the Bus Week campaign (1-7 July).

Councillor Jackie Taylor, cabinet member for sustainable transport joined Lee Stockton, operations manager at National Express West Midlands' West Bromwich depot, on one of their brand new Platinum buses when it pulled up at a bus stop outside Sandwell Council House, Oldbury.

Catch the Bus Week is a nationwide campaign organised by Greener Journeys. Now in its seventh year, it is an annual opportunity to highlight the benefits of taking the bus.

The year's theme is: loneliness and how buses can help people reduce isolation and keep people connected.

Statistics from a survey carried out by Greener Journeys shows that a third (33 per cent) of Britons admit that they deliberately catch the bus to have some human contact. Councillor Taylor said: "There's no better time to start experiencing the fantastic services on the bus transport network across the West Midlands. "There are many benefits to taking the bus, walking to the bus stop, can on average, help you achieve half the recommended 30 minutes of exercise per day. "By leaving the car at home and opting to take the bus, it helps to reduce air pollution and congestion on our roads." Lee Stockton, Operations Manager at National Express West Midlands, said: “Buses are absolutely key to keeping our local communities connected.

National Express West Midlands carry millions of people to work, school, town centres and to see their family and friends every day. “Catch The Bus Week is a great opportunity for non-bus users to give it a try. It’s better for your health because it’s less stressful than commuting by car - and it’s cleaner. “We’ve recently invested £7 million in 24 top-of-the-range Platinum buses which have free WiFi, USB charges and extra leg room.

They offer a better, more comfortable experience for our customers and they also have the cleanest, greenest engines on the market as they produce very low emissions.” To find out more about Catch The Bus Week visit or for details of National Express West Midlands buses visit
