Text messaging service launched to signpost residents to health and wellbeing support

Sandwell residents can get health and

wellbeing advice as well information about other support on offer thanks to a new interactive text messaging service launched by Sandwell’s Public Health team.

Hello Sandwell uses signs on lamp posts in busy High Street areas to invite people to text in about the type of support they need. Using Artificial Intelligence to guide the flow of conversation, residents will receive information about the services available to them.

The scheme offers signposting around four key public health topics: the council’s Supporting Sandwell with cost of living advice campaign; Sandwell’s Warm Spaces, mental health; and improving health and wellbeing. Conversations can be started by just scanning the QR code or sending a text message to the address on the lamp post sign or poster.

Posters can also be found in all Sandwell libraries as well as other venues used by community and faith groups. Unlike traditional online platforms that require the internet or a smartphone, Hello Sandwell works by using a standard text messaging service. Residents can also give feedback to help improve the support and/or services they receive.

Standard text messaging rates apply and all message are anonymous with no personal data being recorded Sandwell’s cabinet member for adults, social care and health,

Councillor Suzanne Hartwell, said: “We hope that people will find Hello Sandwell useful. “With so many people now owning a mobile phone, the Hello Sandwell service is a simple and practical way for residents to get information and support about what matters to them, here and now, during the winter season and beyond.”

Sandwell Council has teamed up with digital platform provider Hello Lamp Post to deliver the Hello Sandwell service.

The pilot scheme will run for 12 months until December 2023.
