A Smethwick community centre has received a special council grant to buy new kitchen appliances to help groups that use the facilities.

The £660 town grant provided by Sandwell Council will enable the St John’s Community Centre to buy new appliances to provide modern and safe kitchen facilities for the local groups.

A number of groups use the centre and the new appliances, which include a dishwasher and a cooker, will enable people to receive cooking lessons and healthy lifestyle classes and provide meals for older people and the homeless.

The work at the centre is linked to wider initiatives including the Grow, Cook, Eat initiative. Smethwick town chair Councillor Ann Jaron said: "The members of this centre do excellent work for the local community and this grant will help them to provide a better service to the public."
